Borrowers comfortable with debt

A new survey says that three quarters of Britons in debt say they are comfortable with the amount they owe, and 85% don’t expect to have any problems keeping up repayments.

The survey by CreditExpert said that a third of borrowers expected their debt levels to fall over the next 6 months, compared to just 11% who could foresee borrowing more.

The latest Bank of England figures show that Britain as a whole has £1.2 trillion in personal debt, including both mortgage debt and unsecured debts such as credit cards and loans. This works out to an average debt of over £25,000 per adult, although recent entrants into the housing market will in general owe far more.
